CALL FOR PAPERS
DISABILITY CONFERENCE: 2004
(23 – 27 February 2004)
EARLY CHILDHOOD INTERVENTION
HUMAN RIGHTS
SEVERE DISABILITY
AAC
The focus of the proposed Disability Conference is on Children with severe disabilities in Africa. In particular it aims to further issues surrounding:
Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) whose mission is to prevent or minimize the impact of disabilities on children and their families
Inclusion of children with severe disabilities with the aim of assisting them to become participating members of an inclusive society
Human rights by grappling with the practical implications of dignity, freedom and equality for all children
Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), which aims to provide a means of communication for individuals with little or no functional speech
Types of Presentations:
Opportunities will be provided for different kinds of presentations to allow a broad spectrum of stakeholders to participate and interact.
Traditional platform presentations: (15 minutes). These papers will be relatively few in number and will be selected on the basis of the themes. Each paper will be followed by a question and answer period.
Posters: A presentation suitable for visual presentation. Presenters must prepare a poster presentation that can stand alone. Presenters are expected to be present during the duration of the presentation and posters will be grouped into thematic sessions. Each poster session will have an allocated facilitator and will be structured to have a short presentation by presenters (not more than 5 minutes) followed by an opportunity for discussion on the theme.
Workshops: a Ninety minute presentation of practical ideas focusing on active participation of delegates
Guidelines for submission
A formal proposal is required for all the session formats: traditional platforms, posters and workshops.
Submission of a proposal of any kind is naturally a commitment to register for as well as attend the conference, no matter which session format is requested.
Only proposals received by 31st July 2003 will be considered by the Programme Committee.
Proposals that are incomplete, or otherwise deviate from the format prescribed in the guidelines below, will be returned to the primary author. Please note that sufficient mailing time must be allowed for a potential resubmission to meet the deadline and avoid disqualification of the submission. Failure to follow instructions may also result in errors in the programme.
The first author listed on the proposal submission form will be informed of the proposal’s status by 31st Oct 2003 and should inform all co-authors accordingly.
Since many non-English speaking individuals are expected to participate as presenters as well as audience, presenters are urged to bring handouts and use audio-visual equipment to facilitate understanding of presentations.
Checklist for submitting proposals
All submissions must be in English.
Make a fully prepared and proofread Program Abstract not exceeding two hundred and fifty (250) words to be used by the Programme Committee to evaluate the merits of the proposal. The abstracts will appear in the Conference Programme, and corrections and revisions cannot be made after the submission.
Programme Abstracts should be written:
In 12 point, Arial (preferred)
Single spaced
With a title not exceeding ten (10) words and
a list of author(s) with names and addresses as well as institution or agency affiliation at the time the proposal is submitted.
Telling the readers what the focus of the presentation will be, and describing briefly the aims of the presentation and the strategies you will use to get the information across to your audience. Write in the future tense ("The session will focus on…etc") and make descriptions accurate but concise. Provide an overview of the session rather than a summary.
Send the Proposal Abstract for each proposal preferably in electronic format before the 31st July 2003 to Margi Lilienfeld at derlil@mweb.co.za. Alternatively, send or fax a hard copy to:
