MALARIA UPDATE September 2002
This update serves to present the current trends in the national malaria cases and deaths. It provides feedback to a range of persons involved in malaria control programmes. The figures presented are subject to modification and thus changes in previous month data may occur.
A total of 250 malaria cases with 5 malaria deaths have been reported for September 2002.
Just less than half (44%) of the total number of malaria cases reported for the month of September were from the following facilities: Donald Fraser Hospital, Mutale District (13); CN Phatudi Hospital, Naphuno District (17); Folovhodwe Clinic, Mutale District (13); Madimbo Clinic, Messina District (25); The Oaks Clinic, Hoedspruit (20); Tshilidzini Hospital, Thohoyandou (23).
In comparison to 2001/2002 season, this total of cases represents a 53% decrease for the period July to September. The case-fatality for the reported period from July to September is 2.0%.

A total of 334 malaria cases with no deaths have been reported for September 2002. Just less than 50% (149/334) of the malaria cases reported for September were from the Tonga district. The Komatipoort Municipal facility and Tonga Hospital collectively accounted for 50% of these cases reported in the Tonga District. The Rob Ferreira Hospital and the Nelspruit Private Hospital collectively accounted for 54% of the malaria cases reported for the Nelspruit District. More than 50% (57/98) of the reported cases from Kabokweni District were from the Kruger Park and its surrounding parks.
During September 2002, an increase in the number of reported cases from the Kruger National Park was observed. Malaria cases were reported from the following areas of the Kruger Park: Onder Sabie (7), Pretoriouskop (1), Satara (2), Skukuza (21), and Tsokwane (1). This increase is being investigated and details will be communicated in future updates.
In comparison to 2001/2002 season, this total of cases represents a 38% increase for the period July to September. Despite this increase in the number of reported cases, the case fatality rate is low (0.2).

A total of 138 malaria cases and no deaths have been reported for September 2002. For September 34 cases were detected via active surveillance and 104 were detected via passive surveillance. The Ingwauma District (52) and the South District (50) collectively accounted for 74% (102/138) of the total number of reported malaria cases.
