Regulations relating to Irradiated foodstuffs

The Minister of Health and Welfare, in terms of section 15(1) of the Foodstuffs, Cosmetics and Disinfectants Act, 1972 (Act 54 of 1972), has made the regulation contained in the Schedule hereto.

SCHEDULE

Definitions

1. For the purposes of this regulation-

"ionising radiation" means radiation capable of producing ions directly or indirectly in its passage through matter;

"irradiation" means deliberate exposure to ionising radiation and

"irradiated" has a corresponding meaning.

2. No foodstuff which has been irradiated shall be sold unless the Minister or the Director-General has in writing, approved the sale of such irradiated foodstuffs.
