Condom distribution during the world cup

Issued by the National Ministry of Health

4 January 2010

The Department of Health would like to dismiss the rumours making the rounds in the media about a shortage in condom distribution as untrue and unfounded.

Our programmes are well on track.

Our monthly distribution is between 38 to 43 million condoms. In November 2009 alone, we distributed about 63 million condoms.

We will also have enough supply for the 2010 FIFA World Cup

Deputy Minister of Health Dr Molefi Sefularo said this about our obligation as the Department Department of Health:

“We have a duty as the health sector, and especially the Department of Health, to fulfil all of our obligations towards FIFA. We have prepared ourselves to provide high quality health care for South Africa and for our visitors during the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

“We have put systems in place to mitigate the risks of injuries, including those that might arise during mass gatherings. We are prepared and have put systems in place to prevent and treat communicable diseases.”
