New Council members to be appointed to serve on the South African Nursing Council (SANC)

The Minister of Health Dr Manto Tshabalala-Msimang is calling for nominations for appointment of new members to serve on the South African Nursing Council (SANC) for 2008-2013. Nominations will close on the 14th March 2008.

The term of the current Council is expiring on the 31st of May 2008, as stipulated in the Regulations relating to the Nomination and Appointment of Members of the Council, gazetted on the16th January this year.

In terms of Section 5 of the Nursing Act, 2005, (Act No. 33 of 2005), 25 persons will be appointed by the Minister of Health to serve on the SANC for a period of 5 years starting from June 2008. The persons shall be appointed by the Minister on the basis of nominations made by nursing professionals.

The main functions of the Council is to protect the public through accreditation of nursing education institutions, conducting examinations, doing inspections and upholding the standards of the profession and health care in compliance to the Act.
