Johannesburg Hospital has entered into an agreement with Maputo Central Hospital which will lead to patient referral and exchange of health professionals between the two hospitals.
The agreement was signed by Johannesburg Hospital Chief Executive Sagie Pillay and his Maputo Central Hospital counterpart Fransisco Candido at Johannesburg Hospital today.
The agreement is part of the Cooperation Agreement between South Africa and Mozambique signed by the Health Ministers of the two countries in December 2005 which encourages these countries to work together on various health matters.
Maputo Central Hospital is the highest level hospital in Mozambique. The Hospital will now be able to refer cases that it is unable to manage to Johannesburg Hospital. The referring hospital shall carry the costs with regard to treatment and hospitalization including travel and accommodation expenses.
The agreement between Johannesburg and Maputo Central Hospital will facilitate opportunities for Mozambican post graduate medical students to study in South Africa. An exchange programme for health specialists is also going to be developed between the two hospitals.
