Despite all the claims about the dispensing fee being unviable for retail pharmacy and pharmacists having no confidence in the future of this sector as a result of government interventions to reduce the prices of medicines, the Department of Health continues to receive a steady stream of applications for new pharmacy licences.
In the past year, there have been 162 licences that were issued. The number represents an average of 13 licences being issued per month between 01 February 2006 and 31 January 2007.
One of the assertions has been that these licence applications are only for corporate pharmacies. This is also untrue. The majority of applications for licences are for independently owned pharmacies.
Another misconception is that the fee discourages pharmacists from going into rural areas and historically disadvantaged communities. Over the past year, 30% of new licences issued were for pharmacies located in historically disadvantaged areas. Some of the examples are licences issued for new pharmacies at Nquthu in the rural northern KwaZulu-Natal and another at Qumbu in the former Transkei part of the Eastern Cape (Nquthu Central Pharmacy and Qumbu Pharmacy)
The Department of Health views this as a positive and encouraging trend which contributes to our efforts of making healthcare accessible and affordable.
