Health Minister & Gauteng MEC to launch National Move for Health during an imbizo in Alexandra Township

Health Minister, Dr Manto Tshabalala-Msimang and Gauteng MEC Dr Gwen Ramokgopa, accompanied by health professionals, to launch the national Move for Health initiative, which forms part of the National Department of Health's healthy lifestyles campaign.

The launch will be in Alexandra Township, Johannesburg on Monday, 30 May 2005.

The activities of the day will start with a Media Conference from 9am to 10am at Altrek Stadium, followed by a 3km health walk, which starts and finishes at the stadium from 10am to 11am. The Minister and MEC will also address an Imbizo from 11am to 1pm.

The launch in Alexandra runs in conjunction with resolutions taken during the World Health Assembly that advocate a healthy lifestyle as a concerted worldwide effort to curb the high prevalence of lifestyle diseases such as cardiovascular, diabetes, obesity, colon cancer, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, depression and anxiety.

The slogan for the campaign is: "Vuka South Africa, Move for Your Health".

The programme of the day also includes free screenings for diseases such as hypertension.
