Micronutrients and AIDS

Issued by Ministry of Health

14 April 2005

The Department of Health supports the use of multivitamin tablets as a source of micronutrients for people living with HIV and AIDS. The Department of Health provides micronutrient tablets and food supplementation in the 122 health facilities that have been accredited to provide HIV and AIDS related treatment. We are encouraging people to use these services as they assist in prolonging the progression from HIV infection to the development of AIDS defining conditions.

The role of micronutrient supplementation has also been endorsed by the World Health Organisation conference on Nutrition and HIV and AIDS which was held in Durban earlier this week.

Government's Comprehensive Plan for Management, Care and Treatment of HIV and AIDS covers the areas of prevention, good nutrition and healthy lifestyles, treatment of opportunistic infections, traditional medicine and antiretroviral drugs. Government is committed to work with any organization that supports the implementation of this Plan in its totality.
