The South African Government has awarded the tender to supply anti-retroviral drugs to public health facilities country wide. Seven successful pharmacuetical companies were announced on Wednesday, 2 March 2005
The tender has been awarded as follows:
Didanosine tablets 25mg, 50mg, 100mg to Pharmacare
Efivarenz 50mg, 200mg, 600mg (capsules and tablets) to MSD
Indinavir capsules to MSD
Lamivudine solution to Pharmacare
Lamivudine 150mg tablets to GSK and Pharmacare
Lopinavir/ Ritonavir capsules and solution to Abbott
Nevirapine syrup to Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals
Nevirapine 200mg Tablets to Pharmacare
Ritonavir solution to Abbott
Stavudine solution to BMS
Stavudine 20mg Tablets to Pharmacare
Stavudine 30mg, 40mg tablets to Cipla and Aspen
Zidovudine syrup to Pharmacare
Zidovudine 100mg capsules to GSK
Zidovudine 300mg tablets to Pharmacare
Ritonavir capsules and Abacavir syrup were awarded in January 2005 on another tender.
The successful suppliers and provincial health procurement officials will meet every three months. This is a mandatory meeting to allow the provinces and suppliers to plan adequately and meet the demand for ARV's at public health facilities. It would also ensure that facilities always have suffucient drugs in store.
Provinces can expect the first delivery of ARV drugs in 6 to eight weeks.
The tender is R3,4 billion for three years. It expires in 2007.
