Sixteen Days of activism on no violence against women

From the 25th November to 10 December the Department of Health in participation of Sixteen Days of Activism on no Violence against Women and Children. The department is carrying out different activities ranging from a stage play, jazz music, and a workshop. The Minister of Health, Dr Manto Tshabalala-Msimang will be among other ministers who will be recommitting themselves to fight violence against women and children. This occassion will take place on the 10th of December at the Union Buildings.

Sixteen Days of activism on no violence against women and children has been designated as a strategy for creating awareness to reduce violence against women and children. The department through its activities will be targeting its employees, other government departments and the general public.

The main event targeting the general public will be a drama and music concert on December 4. The stage play, Sweat on Somerset, is written and directed by Cory McLeod. Through the play he demonstrates the agony of women working in the sex industry. The play is about the women who are involved in this industry- their lives and tragedies. Zimbabwean born artist, Oliver Mtukudzi, will be raising awareness about violence against women through his music. The event will take place between 18:00 to 22:00 at Pretoria City Hall, opposite Transvaal Museum, Corner Visagie and Bosman Streets. Admission is free.

Amongst the speakers on violence against women on this day will be Elna McIntosh, a sexologist and sex workers rights activist.
