Emergency Medical Services

The Emergency Medical Services (EMS) unit is responsible for the development of policy and guidelines for the provision of EMS both in the pre- and inter-hospital environment. The pre-hospital environment includes the level of provision of emergency medical services (ambulance), inter-health facility referral of patients, aero-medical services and training.

The in-hospital aspect relates to the establishment of emergency centres within hospitals.

In addition to this the unit is required to closely support the provinces in achieving required service delivery levels.

Disaster Management

The Disaster Management unit is responsible for the development of policy and guidelines for disaster management, from a Health perspective. The unit is the focal point for all disaster management relating to both national and inter-national issues. The unit represents the Department of Health on the National Disaster Management Committee, and the SADC Health Disaster Management Committee.

The unit is also responsible for facilitating the development of health related strategies for disasters, in all provinces, and is required to closely support the provinces in the management of all aspects of disaster management.

Medical Advice

The Medical Advice unit provides medical advice to State and Provincial Departments on various issues relating to sick certificates, permanent appointments, early retirement due to ill health and immigrants seeking permanent residence.

In addition it also serves as the medical advisor to the Military Disability Pensions Sub-directorate within the Department of Finance, and the medical scheme (MEDCOR) of the Department of Correctional Services.
