Sub-Directorate: Radionuclides
Radioactive materials which are used for medical, scientific, agricultural, commercial and industrial purposes are controlled by strict safety regulations based on international guidelines. No person may engage in any activity involving radioactive material without having obtained a written authority to do so. This is done for each nuclide, the different applications, laboratories, etc. Regular on-site inspections of the premises of holders of authorities are carried out to ensure compliance with the requirements laid down by the Act and the Regulations
The sub-directorate Radionuclides is responsible for:
- Licensing of all holders who uses both sealed and unsealed radioactive nuclide and the issueing of authorities for the purposes of producing or otherwise acquiring of, or disposing of, or the importing, exporting, being in the possession of, using or conveying Group IV hazardous substances in terms of the Hazardous Substances Act
- Investigation of radiation incidents and the loss of radioactive nuclides
- Industrial Radiography inspections
- Disposal of non-nuclear radioactive waste
- Licensing of laboratories using radioactive nuclides
- Environmental sampling at, e.g. sewerage plants
- Provide guidelines on leak testing of sealed sources
- Measurements of radon levels
- Dose assessments after radiation incidents and accidents
- Counting of foodstuffs for contamination
- Provide technical asistance, advice, training and educational programmes to industrial, scientific and professional users of Group IV hazardous substances
- Licensing of incinerators
