Sub-Directorate: Inspectorate

The Inspectorate exercises regulatory control with regard to the use of electronic products and radionuclides. Regular inspections are carried out at medical institutions and industrial premises in order to ensure that patients, personnel and members of the public are protected from radiation. Control of electronic products takes place by means of licensing premises, the particular application in respect of which the unit is to be used as well as the unit itself.

In addition to the inspection and control functions, the Inspectorate is also responsible for:

• Ongoing technical support to distributors and users
• In service training of radiation workers where specific needs are identified
• Investigation of radiation incidents 
• Assisting the South African Police Service during police investigations
• Practical training of IAEA delegates from SADAC countries, etc
