Functions of the Directorate:

The Directorate: Pharmaceutical Economic Evaluations was formed in 2003, with its mandate to look into the issues relating to the pricing of medicines in the Republic. According to the Medicines and Related Substances Amendment Act 101 of 1997, Section 22 G provides for the Minister of Health to appoint members of the Pricing Committee that shall be responsible for the formulation of a transparent pricing system for medicines in South Africa amongst other things .The Directorate Pharmaceutical Economic Evaluations plays a Secretariat role to this committee.

Other functions of the Directorate: Pharmaceutical Economic Evaluations, inter alia, include:

Conducting pharmacoeconomic analyses on selected medicines
Make inputs on the cost effective selection of medicines in the formulation of treatment guidelines
Ensure lower prices for medicines
Promote availability of affordable, quality, safe and effective medicine
Implement and monitor the medicine pricing regulations
Ensure transparency in the pricing of medicines
Maintain a database of medicine prices in the private sector
Publication of medicine prices to be charged by dispensing doctors, retail pharmacist
Monitor price changes within the pharmaceutical industry
Provide guidelines on price changes
Conduct primary and secondary research on the impact of the medicine pricing regulations on access and affordability
Conduct ongoing price comparisons of pharmaceuticals between South Africa and selected countries
Interrogate the distribution costs of medicines in the pharmaceutical industry.
