Background
The Directorate: Quality Assurance was established in 1994. The Directorate is responsible for the development of systems and methods for quality assurance.
“Quality Assurance” is about defining quality, measuring quality and improving quality of care.

Objectives
- Define national norms and standards for health care services.
- Develop systems and methods for QA and evaluate implementation thereof.

- Facilitate interpersonal cooperation on quality related matters.

The Public Health Care Complaints System
Health care users can register their compliments or dissatisfaction with the service rendered at public health facilities by using the following steps.
- Health care users are strongly encouraged to lodge their complaints with the clinic or hospital manager, of the institution at which the incident occurred.

- If the health care user is still dissatisfied with the handling of her/his complaint, she/he may contact the National Department of Health’s complaints line on 012 312 0709 or use the Complaint Form provided to register the complaint with the National Complaints Center. The complaint letter may be faxed to 012 312 0507, or posted to the details below.
- Complaints may be emailed to sekgoj@health.gov.za and cc to mthemr@health.gov.za
- An acknowledgement letter will be sent to the complainant within 3 working days after receipt of the complaint. The complainant will be provided with contact details for further enquires on the specific complaint.
- The following necessary information must be provided if available to facilitate resolution the complaints:-
- The name of the clinic or hospital where the incident occurred.
- Time and date
- The name of the patient if complaining on behalf of someone.
- The name/s of health care workers (staff) involved.
- Reference numbers given when reporting the complaint to the facility or Provincial office
